Congress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Genetic Improvement of Sheep in Ireland
نویسنده
چکیده
SheepIreland was created in 2008 with a mission of implementing a dynamic genetic improvement program for sheep in the Republic of Ireland. The foundations of SheepIreland comprise of: a central database, ram producer pedigree flocks, four central progeny testing flocks, and 15 maternal lamb producer commercial flocks. The selection objective has both a terminal and a replacement aspect. Genetic merit is presented in monetary units and a percentile star-rating which helps farmers to visualise the most profitable animals for selection. SheepIreland and Teagasc are collaborating closely on research exploring the genetics aspects of novel traits such as lamb visual score or faecal egg count and the integration of genomic selection.

Genetic Relationships among Four Saudi Arabian Sheep Populations
Four Saudi Arabian indigenous sheep populations including Najdi, Hbsi, Arb, and Naemi were genotyped for 16 microsatellite markers recommended by the food and agriculture organization (FAO). This study aims to provide information on the genetic structure of the breeds analyzed and give indications and proposals for the cross breeding program. All loci were polymorphic in all populations and loc...
متن کاملCongress of Genetics Applied to Livestock Production Genomic Selection in Sheep Breeding Programs
Implementation of genomic selection in sheep breeding provides a number of challenges, compared to dairy cattle, because of the higher genetic diversity between and within sheep breeds, the cost of maintaining reference populations and the limited ability of individual breeders to invest in genotyping. Within this study, we compare theoretical and realized genomic prediction accuracies for trai...
متن کاملGenetic diversity of myostatin and calpastatin genes in Zandi sheep
Myostatin (MSTN) is an inhibitor of skeletal muscle growth, and a mutation in the gene coding region leads to increased muscling. Calpastatin (CAST) is a specific inhibitor of the ubiquitous calcium-dependent proteases, µ-calpain and m-calpain, found in mammalian tissues. In this study, genomic DNA was extracted from Zandi sheep blood samples. Gel monitoring and spectrophotometer methods were u...
متن کاملGenome Wide Association Studies, Next Generation Sequencing and Their Application in Animal Breeding and Genetics: A Review
Recently genetic studies have been revolutionized by next generation sequencing (NGS) technology, and it is expected that the use of this technology will largely eliminate defects in the methods of association studies. The NGS technology is becoming the premier tool in genetics. However, at the moment the use of this method is limited especially in the livestock due to high cost and computation...
متن کاملIndigenous Sheep Production in Ethiopia: A Review
Research results and facts of indigenous sheep production were reviewed with the aim of delivering relevant information for the beneficiaries. The common production system used in Ethiopia was the extensive type, which was characterized by small flock sizes and the flock being periodically devastated by diseases. Some indigenous sheep groups of the country were characterized and their names wer...
